In my previous post, I neglected to mention what the major issues are for librarians at the University of Ottawa. At the beginning of our current round of bargaining we brought the following issues to the table:
– Performance standards in librarians’ annual reviews. UO librarians felt that the need to have “more than satisfactory” in their annual reviews was excessive and meaningless.
– Promotion system, including the removal of the Research Stream and the Administrative Stream. This is a longstanding issue whereby the CA is decidedly stacked against librarians who prefer a research-oriented career. Promotion requirements are much higher for those who take the research route compared to those who take the Administrative route and librarians want these two career paths to be recognized as equally valued in the CA.
– What constitutes Administrative Activities vis à vis Professional Activities.
– Hours of work. Librarians are tied to a work schedule of 8:45 – 5:00 every day of the week. Librarians want to have some flexibility in their working hours.
Stay tuned for a negotiations update regarding librarian issues specifically. This will bring everyone up to date on where we are with respect to the issues above and what remains to be settled.
